Parent communication
Every week I will e-mail or send home a newsletter to let you know what types of things we are working on that week in our class. I usually send this home on Monday. On Mondays I will also send home any graded work that I am not keeping for your student’s portfolio.
I will communicate with you through phone calls, notes, and/or e-mail. Please feel free to call me or send a note or e-mail anytime you have comments, questions, or concerns. We both want what is best for your child, and open communication will help ensure that.
Homework
Your fifth grader can count on having homework most evenings. As a mother of two Pershing graduates, I know that middle school students have a significant amount of homework. I want your child to be up to the middle school challenge next year. Most of your fifth grader’s homework will be in reading and math. In general, your child will have somewhere between ½ hour and 1 hour of homework most evenings.
Student planners
Your child will receive a student planner, where daily assignments will be written. I will be sure that your student has written in their planner before leaving school. Please check your child's planner each night to see what homework is necessary for that evening. Your child will also have a homework folder, where both completed and not-yet-finished homework for that day can be found.
Grading policy
Homework turned in on the due date will be graded for full credit. Homework turned in after the due date will be graded for partial credit.
IGNIte
We are an IGNiTE classroom. IGNiTE classrooms are technology-rich environments where students have the opportunity to use technology as a tool for learning. It is an exciting, engaging way for students to work and learn cooperatively. We will not be using the computers all day every day, but instead we will use them as a valuable resource. I can promise you that your fifth grader will love being in an IGNiTE classroom!
Requested parent involvement
I encourage you to stay involved in your fifth grader’s education. This is an exciting year for them as they complete their elementary education. You can help your fifth grader be successful this year by:

Requested parent involvement
I encourage you to stay involved in your fifth grader’s education. This is an exciting year for them as they complete their elementary education. You can help your fifth grader be successful this year by:
- Committing to good attendance and being on time to school
- Providing a time and a place to study in the evenings
- Supporting your child’s academic efforts by asking lots of questions and being interested in his/her school day
- Volunteering, if possible
- Keeping the lines of communication open with me - ask questions!
